Maryland Nonprofits Standards for Excellence Award

Our Mission

Civic Works is Baltimore’s urban service corps and an AmeriCorps program. Our mission is to build a future for Baltimore’s youth through community service and skills development. Every year, our corpsmembers spend a year or a summer in service to Baltimore, and in return, receive a modest living allowance, an education award that can be used for college or vocational school, and the job readiness and life skills needed to secure and maintain employment.

More than 3,000 young adults have participated in a Civic Works program, transforming Baltimore’s communities while improving their own job skills and education. Our corpsmembers, along with over 29,000 volunteers have:

  • converted 173 vacant lots into community gardens,
  • planted 23,000 trees and 14,000 flowers,
  • rehabilitated 58 homes for low-income residents,
  • tutored and mentored over 22,000 students in the Baltimore area,
  • Improved the energy efficiency of 1,150 houses,
  • and accomplished many other important projects.
