B’more Green, Building Baltimore’s Brownfields Workforce
B’more Green Mission Statement:
Our mission is to serve the employment needs of Baltimore residents through environmental job training and employment
development initiatives in the areas of Brownfield’s remediation and hazardous materials abatement and containment projects.
Program description:
B’more Green is an environmental workforce development program developed and operated by Civic Works, a 501 (c ) 3 organization and Baltimore’s service corps. The program is a combination of classroom study and hands on skills training that prepare participants for entry-level careers in the field of environmental construction and technology. All participants in the B’more Green program receive environmental health and safety certification training, as well as employability skills and personal development workshops, addressing obtaining and retaining employment.
The Civic Works organization has fourteen years of successful experience in preparing and employing underserved residents for jobs. Previous customers consist of both youth and adults, and include homeless individuals, “ex-offenders”, unemployed veterans and others with employment barriers and little or no work experience. Partners in our programs have included city, state, and federal agencies, private employers, and other non-profit institutions. Many private environmental employers and union contractors support the B’more Green workforce development initiative.
Results:
Since 2001, B’more Green has trained 130 participants. The program graduated 107 out of 130 (82%) enrollees and 97 (90%) graduates were placed in employment following graduations. The program achieved an even higher level of success during the 2005/2007-grant cycle. The overall rate of employment placements for that period was 92%. B’more Green trained a total of 70 participants during the 2005/2007-grant cycle and graduated 66. Following graduation 61 participants were placed in employment, with an average starting wage of $13.33 per hour. Of the 61 graduates placed in environmental employment, 47 held criminal records.
